Dr. Viktoriia Sharmanska

Research Fellow - Faculty of Engineering
Imperial College London (Confirmed)

Dr Sharmanska has been a research fellow of the Imperial College of London since October 2017. She currently leads a project centered on machine-learning techniques entitled 'Deep Understanding of Human Behaviour from Video Data: Action Emotion Approach'. She is also a visiting research fellow at the University of Sussex where she has contributed to several papers on deep-learning methods.  Her research interests include deep learning methods and cross-modal transfer that are suitable for learning from complex visual data. Viktoriia is passionate about designing intelligent systems that can learn concepts from visual data using machine learning models. She received her BSc and MSc in Applied Mathematics from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine, and her PhD in Computer Vision and Machine Learning from IST Austria.

  • Asking what is (and what is not) visual data: machine versus human perspective
  • How do we teach computers ‘to see’? Working towards systems which can learn concepts from visual data with a human teacher
  • Considering how deep-learning methods can be employed to enhance a systems’ capacity to recognised objects, context, actions and emotions
